At Our Lady of Lourdes we teach the children about different genres of writing and give them the skills to develop their own independent writing styles.
We follow the National Curriculum guidelines in terms of teaching a wide range of genres and spelling which progress through the year groups. We have adapted the Key Learning documents (Lancashire English Team) to meet the mixed age classes that we have in school.
Children are inspired in their writing by a range of stimuli including links with our themes for example Legends and Adventure during our theme on Ancient Greece and The Iron Man as a novel linking to the work that the children are doing on Rocks & Soils .
Children begin to check and edit their own work in the infants and they are involved in the next steps in their learning through our learning journeys for writing which each child progresses through at their own pace. We emphasise the development of children's creative expression and, alongside this, teach skills such as spelling, grammar and punctuation. Children work in small mixed age ability groups focused on phonics and spelling on a daily basis engaged in dynamic and fun activities led by all our teachers and teaching assistants.
We celebrate the work that the children do in our Writing displays and regularly photocopy work for children to share with their parents and upload them to twitter.
We use a range of resources to help support the Writing process like:
