Music

At Our Lady of Lourdes we aim to ensure children perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians. We would like children to leave our school with a greater knowledge of the musical world and have the skills and confidence to continue this into later life. It is important that children have the opportunity to perform and represent themselves and their school to add to their personal development.

We use the Model Music Curriculum and the ‘Lancashire Music Hub’ as a basis for our curriculum and have tailored to suit the needs of our children and our learning challenge curriculum. We teach them to learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others. Children use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence. They understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated and are given the knowledge to understand the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. Skills are planned from EYFS are built upon within each year group. Lessons are taught weekly. Each year children have the opportunity to perform musically to a wider audience.

At the end of each year, children are assessed against the skills progression for their year group.  Evidence of music is recorded using big books and recordings. Monitoring will take place in the form of lesson observations, walkthroughs and pupil discussions.
